About Layer Lines
Layer Lines started in 2023 as a way to keep my own notes straight. I'd just upgraded from a cheap bedslinger that fought me every week to a proper CoreXY machine, and I was tired of re-learning the same lessons about bed adhesion and filament storage every few months because I hadn't written anything down the first time. The notes turned into posts, the posts found an audience of people in the same spot I'd been in, and four years later I'm still doing it most weekday evenings after my daughter goes to bed.
I'm Dana Whitfield. By day I do mechanical drafting for a small manufacturing shop, which means I spend a lot of my actual job thinking about tolerances, materials, and why a part didn't come out the way the drawing said it would — skills that turned out to transfer almost directly into troubleshooting a desktop 3D printer. By evening and weekend, I run three printers in my garage: a daily-driver CoreXY machine, a bedslinger I keep around specifically to test whether advice still applies to older hardware, and whatever loaner or review unit happens to be on the bench that month.
What this site is for
Everything here comes from printers I actually own and prints I actually ran, usually more than once before I write about the result. When I compare products, I buy them at retail price with my own money specifically so a free sample doesn't color the review. When I write a build guide, I build the thing in my own garage before publishing the steps, including the parts that didn't work on the first try.
- Printer and filament reviews — based on at least a few weeks of real use, not an unboxing.
- Troubleshooting guides — built from my own failure log, not a generic list copied from a forum.
- Build logs — upgrades, enclosures, and accessories I've actually built and used.
- Stories — the stuff that doesn't fit a how-to format but is worth writing down anyway.
Get in touch
If you've got a question about a post, a correction, or a printer you think I should look at, the fastest way to reach me is through the contact link in the site footer. I read everything, even if I can't always reply quickly during a busy print queue.
